Silent hill (2006)
Action horror
What happened in the trailer? The trailer starts with the main protagonist (a woman) explaining to her daughter (and us) why they must go to silent hill. We then journey to Silent Hill and crash along the way. Next we see a change in scenery and a deserted town followed by lots of shots of creepy monsters and the townsfolk of silent hill with a brief explanation of what’s happening.
Which positive, clever or interesting aspects do you think you could include in your own trailer? What generic features were fulfilled well? The films best generic feature is the creepy location. A whole deserted town with eerie buildings and falling ash gives a very creepy setting. Instead of a cheesy voice over the trailer uses actual narration from the film to explain what’s happening which works a lot better and keep us in the world of the film. There are no spoliers in the trailer, all we are told is that the film is set in silent hill and the young girl goes missing, hooking the target audience.
Which aspects of the trailer did you think were unsuccessful and would put of its target audience? How is it disappointing? The main disappointment with the trailer is that, as it is suitable for all audiences, there is no violence or body horror. This lets the trailer down as the film has some good violence and gore, and the trailer doesn’t show this losing some target audience. The trailer also could have used more horror, more images of the creepier monsters instead of the rather ‘tame’ creatures or more images of the creepy citizens of silent hill.
What did you score the trailer? Why did it receive this mark? 7. This is because the trailer has some good features and works well to sell the film but doesn’t include enough violence and gore. The pacing of the trailer also works well, with the stereotypical slow start and build-up of pace but with short montages of quick outtakes throughout the trailer.
