Thriller horror
What happened in the trailer? The trailer starts by explaining that the parents want to adopt a child and introduces us to the ‘orphan’ and explains that she’s special. The pace quickens and eventually we find out that special actually means psychopathic.
Which positive, clever or interesting aspects do you think you could include in your own trailer? What generic features were fulfilled well? Having a young child as the antagonist is a very clever twist I think as, especially clever young girls, connote innocence and happy times. The trailers pacing, slow at the start then quickens until we find out there is something wrong with Esther (the orphan) and then goes back to a slow pace speeding up again to show Esther hurting people. The creepy location is not fully fulfilled but having a snowy setting seems to give the film/trailer a more frightening feel.
Which aspects of the trailer did you think were unsuccessful and would put of its target audience? How is it disappointing? Again the trailer lacked actual body horror and violence. This is probably so the trailer can be shown to a wider audience but this I think lets down the real horror fans who expect blood and guts. The trailer also didn’t give much away about the film, and you could say it didn’t give enough away to hook the audience. The audience isn’t going to want to pay to see a film that they have no idea what it is about.
What did you score the trailer? Why did it receive this mark? 6 I gave it this mark as the trailer makes the film look good but not very scary. There is no real horror. The only creepy aspect of the film is that the antagonist is a young girl. There is no paranormal aspect or even anybody horror which, in my opinion, is needed in a horror film. The trailer did have a decent pacing which worked well with the creepy song, pleasant at the start with slow paced shots of a young sweet girl and then the song quickens and gets more sinister while we are informed about ‘Esther’ not being ‘normal’ and seemingly very sinister. The film looks interesting and worth watching but not very scary.
